RE4 HD, no discs, Code Veronica, great gaming

Today Resident Evil 4 HD hits XBLA and PSN and I can’t wait to download it. Initially, I wondered why there wasn’t a disc release like Japan got. After reading some informed posts in the forums (capcom unity), it turns out the games don’t run off the discs anyway and only “unlock” the key for install. So in this sense, there is no reason for a disc release at all.

If it ran off the discs, then I can understand why people would get upset, but it doesn’t so there’s no need to wait.

I can’t wait for Code Veronica, finally I can play without having to resort to my Dreamcast/PS2. The convenience of less systems collecting dust to play on your current systems in HD is more than enough incentive for me.

I also favor Code Veronica over the other games in the series as being the best “old school” RE, plus this was the first RE that did not use pre-rendered backgrounds. By far the best part of CV is, for me, the self-destruct sequence, a staple in the series but the last best sequence as RE4 and RE5 disappointed. The alarm, the music, the heart-beat during each door load (and if I remember correctly, the controller shook in the Dreamcast version during this sequence), can’t wait!

I hope a great self-destruct sequence returns in RE6.

Other companies are mad they didn’t think of “Steam” first

I just recently read about the upcoming Battlefield not being on Steam, a decision by EA after not agreeing with Steam’s ToS (and now blaming Valve for that). I think the real issue here is that companies like EA, Ubi, Microsoft are mad they didn’t think of a “Steam”-like platform in the first place. Now they are all trying to come up with their own system for PCs.

Digital distribution already offers its customer base insane deals on games, Steam has them all the time. The sales potential is amazing and now companies are seeking a way to get in on the action (even though some “experts” said PC gaming is dead, shows how much they know). Unlike consoles, Steam doesn’t change if you change your hardware and to be quite honest, I don’t want different forms of digital distribution for each company just to play a their game.

So you will continue to see smokescreens from these companies, but in the end, you snooze, you lose.

Nintendo, it’s time to come back home …

Whatever generation of gaming it is, one thing that has been a staple is that Nintendo was always in it. No matter who the competition was, Nintendo was always there.

I grew up with the NES, but as time passed on, I was mesmerized by other offerings. Currently, out of all 3 systems this generation, my fav is the X360, next to the PS3 and then the Wii. (just my opinion)

When I heard about this new system, I thought to myself, could this be it?
I’m hoping Nintendo will deliver.

We’ve all traveled different roads, but now, it’s time to come back home …

p.s.: This would be a good marketing concept Nintendo ^_^
